What is a Surge Protector and Do I Really Need One?
In light of yesterday’s aggressive electrical storm and the influx of reports of damaged equipment, we thought it would be a good time to share some (hopefully) helpful information on surge protectors!
What Exactly is a Surge Protector?
A surge protector is a small appliance or device that has two main functions. The first is to provide the ability to plug multiple components into one single power outlet. The second and the more important function is to protect your electronic devices from a high-voltage power surge.
How Does a Surge Protector Work?
A typical surge protector passes the electrical current along the outlet to number of the devices plugged into the power strip. If the voltage happens to rise above the acceptable level, the protector will divert the extra electricity into the outlets grounding wire. Grounding wires run parallel to the hot and neutral wires. They provide a pathway for electrical current to follow should there be a breakdown in the system of hot and neutral wires that normally carry the current. Simply put it diverts the power away from your plugged in devices.
Knowing the difference between a power strip and a surge protector.
It is important to note that not all power strips are surge protectors. While they look very similar the sole purpose of a power strip is to add extra outlet space. Sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference if it does not come right out and say so. You can look at the packaging when you are figuring out what exactly you are purchasing. A surge protector should have a joules rating on it’s packaging specifying how much protection it can provide.
As for surge protectors there are two types, ones with a breaker like a home would have and ones without. The difference being that the ones without are cheaper but need to be replaced (depending on the unit) approximately 2 to 5 years.
Here at Truespeed we offer the NEXXT Solutions Smart Wi-Fi surge protector at $49.99. Existing Truespeed customers can come pick one up and the amount can be added to your next bill.
In summary: GET ONE (or how ever many you need) YOU NEED IT. IT PROTECTS YOUR STUFF!
